Herbert William Johnson was born in 1882 at Sneinton, Nottingham he was the son of Walter William a iron foundry moulder and Mary Ann Johnson née Rose of 81 Port Arthur Road Sneinton Dale Nottingham.

His father Walter William was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Mary Ann Rose was born in 1859 at Nottingham, they were married on 20th August 1877 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they had 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 81 Port Arthur Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham, Walter William 54 yrs is an iron foundry moulder he is living with his wife Mary Ann 52 yrs and their children, Kate Ellen 19 yrs a hosiery mender, Frank Henry 18 yrs a hosiery warehouse hand, Charles Samuel 15 yrs a lace warehouse boy and Horace Edward 8 yrs of age.

Hebert William was the husband of Lilian Radford, (born 23rd January 1886) they were married in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration district. they lived at 4 Park Road Chilwell Nottinghamshire.

Military history

Private Herbert William Johnson enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/8th battalion Serwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
