Military history

13912 Private Leonard Hatherley enlisted on 31 August 1914 for 3 years service in the reserves of Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was aged 19 years 303 days, 5 feet 10 inches and a Railway Worker; It is likely that he added to his age by at least one year. On 3 September 1914 he was sent to the depot and on 8th to the 4th extra reserve battalion. After training he was posted to the 1st battalion in France on 27 January 1915. Less than a month later, on 17 February, he was dangerously wounded and sent to No6 Clearing hospital, Merville. and he died there on 25 February. Leonard was buried in Merville Communal Cemetery (grave ref 1.E.6). The battalion had been engaged in repairing breastworks and making the trenches more habitable. It is likely that Leonard was the victim of a sniper as many new men were.
