Family history

William Arthur Briggs was born in 1895 at Grimsby, he was the son of John a brick layers labourer and Edith Parker Briggs née and the brother of John Atkin, Charlotte Emma, Joseph Edward, Walter, Harold and Edith May Briggs.

His father John was born in 1863 at Ranby, Lincolnshire, his mother Edith Parker Atkin was born in 1868 at Grimsby, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recordeded in the Caistor, Lincolnshire registration district, they went on to have 12 children sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 cnesus the they lived at 15 Bateman Street Hyson Green Nottingham John 48 yrs is a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Edith Parker 43 yrs and their 7 children, including William Arthur 15 yrs a cyle hand.

Military history

Private William Arthur Briggs enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 17th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he died of wounds on 4th November 1916 and he is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery

Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 4th November 1918: -

“BRIGGS. – In loving memory of Sergt. W. A. Briggs, K.R.R.C., who died of wounds received in action November 4th, 1916. Deeply mourned by all. – From loving father, mother, brother and sister-in-law Bob and May, friend Joe (in France).”
