John Allen was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John Allen a lacemaker and Celia Allen (née Leavers, later Green) and the brother of Leonard (killed in action (13/9/1916) and Albert Arthur Allen. He was the half brother of Lucy, Annie Mary, Charles, Fanny, Robert and Frederick Green.

In 1911, the family lived at 1, Adams Cottages, Lindsay Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham with Celia's second husband George Green.

John married Frances Lane (born 20th July 1888) in 1918 at Nottingham, they lived at 3 Birchin Street, Carrington, Nottingha.

Commencing 12th May 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private John Allen enlisted at Nottingham and went to France on 4th November 1914 with the 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He died on 5th November 1918 of broncho pneumonia and is buried Etaples Military Cemetery, France. Plot 49, Row A. Grave 28
