Family history

Walter George Howlett was born on 25th July 1875 at Norwich, he was baptised on 6th September 1876 at Norwich, he was the son of William Henry Howlett a bricklayer and Amelia Howlett née Foster Fryer.

Walter George married Mary Ellen Hawley (born 1878 Ilkeston) on 9th March 1901 at the Nottingham register office, they lived at 2 Edgar Rise Peas Hill Road Nottingham they had the following children, Doris May born 4th July 1901, Leslie George born 12th April 1904, Hilda May born 12th November 1905 and William Henry born 1st April 1912.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Rosslyn Street, Manning Street, Nottingham, Walter George 34 yrs is a gas meter inspector, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 33 yrs and their children, Doris May 9 yrs, Leslie George 7 yrs and Hilda May 5 years of age.

Military history

Sergeant Walter George Howlett enlisted at Nottingham on 12th June 1915, giving his address as 14 Edgar Rise, Peashill Road, Nottingham his age was 39 yrs and 11 months he was a gas inspector, He was posted to the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was promoted Lance Corporal on 27th July 1915 and Corporal on 3rd January 1916. He landed in France on 6th March 1916. On 13th September 1918 he was discharged from the Army due to being no longer fit for active service. He was awarded a silver war badge no B19693. He died on 14th March 1919 aged 45 yrs, he is buried at Nottingham Church Cemetery.
