Family history

Walter Bernard Lee was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of Edward Thomas a hotel manager and his first wife the late Selina Gilding. of 98 Lees Hill Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.

His father Edward Thomas was born in 1862 at Nottingham, his mother Selina Gilding was born in 1864 at Nottingham, she died in 1899 aged 35 yrs, they had 3 children, Percy Edward b1886, Arhtur Herbert born 1888 and Walter Bernard born 1894 .

His father went on to marry Elizabeth Hill (later Groom ) in 1899.

In the 1911 census the family lived at The Old Rose Revived Bellar Gate, Nottingham. and later at 98 Lees Hill Street Sneinton (both Nottingham).Edward Thomas 48 yrs was a hotel manager he is living with his second wife Elizabeth 49 yrs and their children Walter Bernard 17 yrs assiting in his fathers business and Gertrude Annie Groom (nee Lees) 24 yrs assisting in her fathers business.

Military history

Private Walter Bernard Lees, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 12/13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 9th September 1915 joining the British Expeditionary Force. He died of pneumonia on 22nd November 1918 and is buried in Caudry British Cemetery.

Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd November 1919:-

“LEES. – In loving memory of Pte. Walter Bernard Lees, late 12/13th Northumberland Fusiliers, died at Cambria, pneumonia, November 22nd, 1918. – Dad, mam, sister, brothers, late Lowdham.

“LEES. – In sacred remembrance of Pte. W. B. Lees, Northumberland Fusiliers, who died in France, November 22nd, 1918. – Sadly missed by his friend George.”
