Alfred Edward Banton was born in 1896 at West Bromwich, he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Banton née Churm of 26 Duchess Street, Creswell, Derbyshire.
His father John was born in 1867 at Birmingham, his mother Mary Ann Churm was born in 1866 at West Bromwich, they were married on 14th December 1885 in Staffordshire, they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Duchess Street, Creswell, John 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and their children, Myra Annie 21 yrs no occupation listed, John 17 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Mary Ann 12 yrs a scholar, Thomas Henry 10 yrs a scholar, Gertrude 7 yrs, May 5 yrs and Charles William 1 year of age.
Private Alfred Edward Banton enlisted at Creswell whilst living at Creswell, he initially served with the service number 105729 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 25th August 1918 and is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, Bercordel- Bercourt, France.
