Charles Henry Slater was born in 1888 at Derby he was the son of the late James Slater a house painters labourer and Elizabeth Slater née Tingle of 3, The Woodlands, Langwith, Mansfield, Notts.
His father James was born in 1844 at Derby, he died in 1912 aged 68 yrs and Elizabeth Tingle born 1850 at Derby, they were married on 30th July 1873 at Derby, they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at Wellow Green, Ollerton, James 67 yrs is a house painters labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 61 yrs and their children, Charles 23 yrs a horseman on a farm and Edith 19 yrs assisting in home duties.
Private Charles Henry Slater was called up and enlisted on 29th April 1916 giving his age as 28 yrs and 6 months, he was a labourer living at 13 Harrison Street, Derby, his next of kin was his mother Elizabeth of the same address, he was posted to the 3rd battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, he went to the Mediterranean Expedition Force on 3rd September 1916 and was killed in action on 25th February 1917 in Mesopotamia having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial Iraq.
