Family history

Benjamin James Savage was born on 21st December 1892 at Tideswell and was baptised on 28th February 1893 at Tideswell, he was the son of Thomas Hamilton Savage a school head teacher, and Diana Savage née Richard of 48, Whitefield Rd. Stockton Heath, Warrington.

His father Thomas Hamilton was born in 1855 at West Derby, Lancahsire, his mother Diana Richard was born in 1855 at Llanycrwys, Wales, they were married on 23rd April 1879 at Llanycrwys, Wales they had 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Cressbrook, Buxton Thomas Hamilton Savage 56 yrs a school head teacher is living with his wife Diana 56 yrs, and their children, Timothy Francis 21 yrs a student,Benjamin James 18 yrs a cotton mill warehouseman, Diana Ellen 23 yrs a student and Isabel May 12 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Benjamin James Savage enlised at Tideswell on 18th March 1911 giving his age as 18 yrs and 3 months, he was a mill hand he served with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment.He was embodied on 5th August 1914, landing in France on 28th February 1915. He was killed in action on 14th October 1915 having no known grave his name is commemrated on the Loos Memorial.
