Family history

William known as Willie Needhamd was born in 1885 at New Whittington, Derbyshire he was the son of the late Joseph Needham a carpenter joiner and Sarah Needham née Royle, of New Whittington

His father Joseph was born in 1845 at Sittinglow, Derbyshire, he died prior to 1901 his mother Sarah ERoyle was born in 1847 at Chimley, Derbyshire, they were married on 6th Febraury 1866 at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, they had 8 children.

In the 1911 census Willie 25 yrs a coal miner hewer he is living with his older brother Herbert 33 yrs a coal miner hewer and his wife Minnie 32 yrs and their son Arthur 10 yrs a scholar and his older brother Joseph 39 yrs a coal miner hewer, they are living at 4 Cross London Street, New Whittington, Derbyshire.

Military history

Private Willie Needham enlisted at Cresswell, Derbyshire, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 9th August 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A)
