Family history

William Garbett was born in 1883 at Cannock, he was the son of James a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Garbett née Jones of Shriebrook and the brother of Alice, David and Benjamin Garbett. of Shirebrook.

His father James was born in 1863 at Blowick Staffordshire, his mother Mary Ann Jones was born in 1861 at Shrewsbury, they were married on 25th December 1883 at St Lukes Church Cannock, they went on to have 15 children sadly 8 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

William marred Beatrice Hodgkins (born 1886 West Bromwich) in 1904 at Sutton in Ashfield, they went on have 3 children, Elsie May born 26th June 1905, John William born 9th March 1909, Richard Edgar born 23rd May 1912

In the 1911 census the family were living at 5 Merchant Street Shirebrook Mansfield. James 48 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Mary Ann 50 yrs and his brother Samuel 45 yrs a coal miner hewer and his married son William 28 yrs a coal miner hewer and his daughter in law Beatrice Garbett 25 yrs and James's children, Alice 13 yrs, David 11 yrs and Benjamin 6 yrs of age.

Williams wife Beatrice died on 3rd December 1914, his pension recod card list his children and gives their guardian as Mary Ann Garbett 63 Portland Road, Shirberook, (his mother ) who was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week commencing 3rdJuly 1916.

Military history

Private William Garbutt enlisted at Shriebrook, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th December 1915, he is buried at Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension
