Family history

Harry Smith was born in 1882 at Billesdon, Leicestershire he was the son of Thomas Smith and Eliza Smith of 13 Timber Hill,Melton Mowbray.

He married Lillian Ellen Harper (born 1st February 1890) they lived at 109 Bould Street, Mansfield they were married in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, Lillian brought a child to the marriage Elsie Harper born 1st November 1911 they had a further child Bertha Lillian born 28th November 1914.

In the 1911 census Harry Smith is a boarder, he is 29 yrs of age and is a coal miner loader, he is boarding at 103 Miall Street, Nottingham, he is boarding with Arthur Whitley 33 yrs a coal miner loader and his family.

Commencing 29th November 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 19 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private Harry Smith enlisted on 8th April 1899 at Melton Mowbray, he was 18 yrs and 7 months old, he was a labourer, he was posted to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was discharged timed served on 4th April 1914.

Embodied on 5th August 1914 he went to France on 4th May 1915, so only in the field one week before his death on 11th May 1915 when he was killed in action. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
