William Alfred Pope was born on 26th March 1878 at Chester, he was baptised on 29th March 1878 at St John’s Church, Chester he was the son of Stephen Pope a brass moulder and the late Rosetta Pope née Lawrence of 93 Stockwell Gate, Mansfield .
His father Stephen Pope was born in 1854 at Chester, his mother Rosetta Lawrence was born in 1853 at Stoke on Trent she died in 1886 at Derby aged 33 yrs, they were married on 15th July 1876 at St Peters Church, Stoke on Trent,
William married Maria Hardy (born 15th August 1880 at Spondon) they were married on 16th April 1900 at Holy Trinity Church, Derby, they went on to have 3 children, William Alfred born 29th December 1900, Anne born 3rd June 1902 and Ada born 25th July 1905.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Malthouse Row, Labington Lane, Derby, William 32 yrs is a blacksmiths striker, he is living with his wife Maria 30 yrs and their children, William Alfred 10 yrs, Annie 8 yrs and Ada 5 yrs of age.
His wife Maria died on 6th October 1912.
William Popes pension record cards shows that each of his 3 children had a guardian, Wiliam’s guardian was Mrs Lilly Ford 76 Darby Street, Derby, Annie’s guardian was Mrs Ellen Ellis 28 Harlem Street, Derby and Ada’ guardian was Mrs Ann Hiddleton 47 Harrington Street, Allenton, Derby, each of the guardians were awarded a pension of 5 shillings a week..
Private William Pope enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Derby he served with 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 6th February 1916 and is buried at Saily-Sur-La-Leys, Canadian Cemetery, Nord France.
Headstone Inscription: "Gone but not Forgotten".
This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
