James William Bateman was born on 29th May 1897 at South Normaton, Derbyshire, he was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Frances Bateman née Radford of 129 Pleasley Hill, Mansfield.
His father was born in 1868 at Dudley, his mother Frances Radford was born in 1870 at Bulwell, they were married on 17th February 1889 at St Pauls Church, South Normanton, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 129 Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill, William 43 yrs is a coal miner and is living with his wife Frances 41 yrs and their children, Mary Elizabeth 20 yrs a laundry hand, Harriet 19 yrs a general domestic servant, Hilda 17 yrs a cotton mill hand, Sarah Ellen 15 yrs a cotton mill hand, James William 13 yrs working at the pit bottom, John Arthur 11 yrs a scholar, Wilfred 4 yrs and Frances Pamela 2 years old.
Private James William Bateman enlisted at Mansfield, he was posted to the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died on 6th April 1915 of cerebro spinal meningitis and was buried at Brighton (Bear Road, Cemetery. plot ZHN 24
Headstone inscription: " Peace Perfect Peace".
this man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
