Ernest Allen was born in 1892 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of Mary Ann Allen of 2 Hill street, Pleasley.

In the 1911 census he has left the family home he is living at the Nags Head, Kirkby in Ashfield, he is living with Arthur Martin 32 yrs a licensed victualler, Ernest Allen is 19 yrs single and a servant and general helper.

He was the husband of Alice May (née Johnson) Allen (born 11th May 1893 ) of 11 George Street, Ladybrook Lane Mansfield. Alice and Ernest married late 1913 they had son Ernest William born 19th March 1914

Military history

Corporal Ernest Allen enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Mansfield, giving his address as 23 Crown Street, Mansfield, and his age as 22 yrs and 8 months, he was a coal miner. He served with the 1/8th SherwoodForesters Regiment, attached to Machine Gun Corp. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915, He was killed in action on first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
