Family history

Frederick Skellington was born in 1898, he was baptised on 29th January 1899 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, he was the son of Joseph, a greengrocer, and Emma Skellington née Taylor and the brother of Florence Anne, Kate, Joseph, Marion Jane and William Henry Gilbert Skellington.

His father Joseph was born in 1870 at Cropwell Bishop, his mother Emma Taylor was born in 1868 at Nottingham, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham, they had 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the1911 census the family lived at 35 Meadow Lane Nottingham Joseph 41 yrs is a greengrocer, he is living with his wife Emma 43 yrs and their chi;ldren, Florence Annie 21 yrs a domestic servant, Kate 19 yrs no occupation listed, Marion Jane 14 yrs a hosiery finisher, Frederick 13 yrs a scholar and William Henry 10 yrs of age.

Military history

Driver Frederick Skellington enlisted at Nottingham, he served with D Battery,72nd Brigade. Royal Field Artileery he was killed in action on 22nd September 1918 he is buried at Fins new british cemetery, Sorell-Le-Grand, France

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 16 October 1918: SKELLINGTON killed in action September 22nd 1918, after three years and 8 months service, Driver Fred Skellington, Royal Field Artillery, 35 Meadow Lane, age 20. Mother, father, sisters, Annie, Kate, Marion, brothers Joe (Russia), Gilbert (Clipstone).

His brothers Joseph and William also served (see obituary).
