Albert Sansom was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick Sansom a plumber and Caroline Sansom née Thorpe of 50 Lamartine Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham.
His father Frederick was born in 1867 at Nottingham, his mother Caroline Thorpe was born in 1863 also at Nottingham, they were married on 24th December 1887 at St Mathias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 8 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 50 Lamartine Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham, Frederick 44 yrs is a plumber he is living with his wife Caroline 48 yrs and their children, Arthur 23 yrs a soldier, Harry 21 yrs a soldier, Annie 16 yrs a lace worker, Albert 18 yrs an engine cleaner, Fred 13 yrs a warehouse worker, Carrie 12 yrs a scholar, Frank 8 yrs a scholar and Gertrude 6 yrs of age.
Albert Sansom enlisted at Nottingham and was probably a reservist.
He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters, entering theatre (France) on 27 December 1914.
At some point he was posted to the 9th Battalion, possibly after being wounded. On 26 September 1916 the battalion attacked as part of the Battle of Thiepval and successfully took all of its objectives.
Albert was one of over a hundred men killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme.
