Family history

Frederick Johns was born in 1897 at Hucknall and was the only child of Henry and Emmaline Johns (née White).

His father Henry was born in 1863 in Whitwick, Leicestershire, and his mother Emmaline White in 1867 in Hucknall. They were married in 1891 (Basford Registration District).

In 1911 the family was living at 42 Annesley Road, Hucknall: Henry (48) a beer off-licence and grocery worker, Emmaline (44) and Frederick (14), no occupation given.

Frederick's parents later lived at 58 Sandy Lane, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire.

His father died on 7 January 1920 and his mother on 5 October 1931.

Military history

Rifleman Frederick Johns enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 10th Battalion Rifle Brigade. He landed in France on 22 July 1915 and was killed in action on 18 September 1916.

Frederick has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France (Pier and Face 16 B and 16 C).

He qualified for the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Family grave, Hucknall Cemetery, inscription: 'In loving memory of Henry Johns died Jan. 7th 1920 aged 57 years. Also Emmeline his beloved wife died Oct. 5th 1931 aged 65 years. Also Frederick their beloved son killed in action in France Sept. 16th, 1916, aged 19 years. Re-united. Erected by her sisters.'
