Family history

Gilbert Clifford Lineker was born in 1895 at West Bridgford, Nottingham, he was the second son of William a lace manufacturer and Alice Lineker née Cooke of 52 Sneinton Dale, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1867 at Nottingham, his mother Alice Cooke was born in 1866 at Nottingham, they were married in 1887 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Hunt Street, Nottingham, William 44 yrs is a lace manufacturer he is living with his wife Alice 45 yrs and their sons, Gilbert Clifford 15 yrs a bobin aand carriage worker in the lace trade and Eric Stanley 4 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Gilbert Clifford Lineker eEnlisted May 1915 at Nottingham, he served with the 1/1st battalion South Notts Hussars, he was killed in action in Palestine on 28th November 1917, he is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 12 December 1917: 'Lineker. Killed in action November 28th, Gilbert C Linerker, Hussars, second son of Mr and Mrs W Lineker, 34 Trent Lane and 34 High Pavement, age 21 (sic).'
