William Henry Hewes was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of Henry Charles a lace dyer and Nellie Hewes née Greaves and the brother of Charles, Henry and Leonard Hewes 33 Charles Street, Nottingham.

his father Henry Charles was born in 1872 at Nottingham his mother Nellie Greaves was born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married in 1896 at Nottingham, they had 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 38 Chandos Street Nottingham Henry Charles 39 yrs is a lace dyer, he is living with his wife Nellie 40 yrs and their children, William 13 yrs a scholar, Chaarles 9 yrs, Harold 8 yrs and Leonard 4 yrs.

Military history

Private William Henry Hewes enlisted at Nottingham on 12th May 1916, giving his age as 18 yrs and 53 days, he was living at 38 Chandos Street, Nottingham, he was a lace dyer, his next of kin was his father Charles Henry of the same address, He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 27th November 1916 at Derby, he was posted to the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was posted to India on 18th January 1917 he went to France on 30th July 1917 and was returned to England on 27th September 1918. He was discharged on 19th October 1918,due to pulmanory tuberculosis he died on 16th November 1918 and is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
