Family history

John Dennis was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Henry Dennis a chimney sweep and the late Ellen Dennis née Martin.

His father Henry was born in 1860 at Sutton in Ahsfield, his mother Ellen Martin was born in 1862 at Nottingham, she died in 1904 aged 42 yrs they were married in 1882 at Nottingham, they had 7 children.

His father remarried in in 1907 at Nottingham to Clara Swindall.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 69 Henry Street, Nottingham, Henry 51 yrs is a chimney sweep he is livig with his second wife Clara 39 yrs a hosiery worker and his children, John Dennis 14 yrs a coal traders assistant and Elsie 11 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private John Dennis enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 2/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he was killed in action on 18th April 1918 and is buried in Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery (grave ref. III.G.1).
