Family history

William Arthur Cumberworth was born in 1897 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of William a general greengrocer and Maria Cumberworth née Bramley and the brother of Albert Edward and Frederick Cumberworth.

His father William was born in 1875 at Holbeach, Lincolnshire, his mother Maria Bramley was born in 1866 at Swallow Vale, Lincolnshire they were married in 1894 they went on to have 5 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 34 Moreland Street Meadow Lane Nottingham, William 36 yrs is greengrocer, he is living with his wife Maria 48 yrs assisting in her husbands business and their children, Albert Edward 16 yrs, William Arthur 14 yrs and Frederick 12 yrs.

Military history

Gunner William Arthur Cumberworth enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th trench mortar battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial.
