Family history

John Walter Cotton was born in 1874 at Nottingham, known as Walter he was the only son of the late William Cotton an engine fitter and the late Betsy Cotton née Champion..

His father William was born in 1851 at Loughborough, he died in 1884 aged 33 yrs, his mother Betsy Champion was born in 1855 at Burton Joyce she died in 1915 aged 60 yrs, they were married in 1872 at Leicester,

Walter married his wife Florence Shipman (born 10th July 1904 at Nottingham) they lived at 9 Carlton Road, Sneinton, Nottingham and later 2 Burrows Gardens Sneinton Nottingham.

In the 1911 census they were living at 2 Burrows Gardens, Windmill Lane, Nottingham. Walter 37 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Florrie 28 yrs a lace dresser.

He died on 16th July 1919 at his home address 2 Burrows Gardnes, Windmill Lane, Sneinton aged 42 yrs he died of 1) cancer of cerical glands and 2 Morbus Cordis (heat disease.) He is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery

Military history

Private Walter Cotton originally enlisted on 12th November 1894 at Nottingham, giving his age as 18 yrs and 7 months, he was a coal miner he served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, saw service in the Tirah Expedition (1897-1898) Cyrpus 3rd March 1899 till 23rd December 1899, Malta 24th December 1899 to the 17th May 1900. The South African Campaign, 18th May 1900 to 26th October 1902, he was discharged on 15th November 1906 on completion of his engagement. He re enlisted at Chilwell camp on 23rd January 1907 aged 31 yrs and 10 months , his next of kin was his wife Florence of 3 Providence Square, Thoresby Street, Sneinton. posted to the Sherwood Foresters he was mobilsed for war on 6th August 1914, he landed in France on 11th November 1914 He was admitted to No.12 General Hospital, Rouen, suffering from bronchitis, on 9th February 1915 and was transferred to England, 19th February 1915. he was discharged on 22nd January 1916 due to termination of his period of engaement.
