Family history

Ernest Coffey was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of William and Maria Coffey née Appleton.

His fatherWilliam was born in 1867, his mother Maria Appleton was born in 1867 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was William born in 1889.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Denmark Street Nottingham Maria 43 yrs is married and a carboard box maker, she is living with her sons,William 22 yrs a brass bobbin finisher and Ernest 13 yrs a scholar.

(his father William is not at the family home of the night of the census.)

Military history

Private Ernest Coffey enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, aged 18, in the attack at Beaumont Hamel, during the Battle of the Somme.

Buried : Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France. Plot 2. Row O. Grave 24.
