Charles Middleton Brown (junior) he was the son of Charles Middleton (senior) and Mary Ellen (Nellie) Brown née Mallett and the brother of Evelyn (later Mitchell), Roland, Florrie, Ellen, Thomas and Jessie Brown.
his father Charles Middleton was born in 1864 in London, his mother Mary Ellen Mallett was born in 1866 at Nottingham, they wer married on 31st March 1886 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 24 Belle View Road, Nottingham Charles Middleton (senior) 47 yrs is a fitter in the lace trade, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 45 yrs and their children, Charles 23 yrs a porter, Evelyn 21 yrs a lace maker, Rowland 18 yrs a telephone fitter, Florence 12 yrs a scholar, Ellen 8 yrs a scholar,Thomas 3 yrs and Jessie 10 months old.
He married Clara Davis (born 28th September 1892) on 19th October 1916 they lived at 4 Pym Street, St Ann's, Nottingham
Commencing 15th April1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillingds and 9 pence a week .
Clara married Arthur Matthews at Nottingham during the summer of 1918 and they lived at 11 Firsby Terrace, Pym Street, St Ann's Nottingham (ASR and 1911 Census).
Previously 10th Bn. K.R. Rif C. R/15721. Pte., 20th Bn. K.R. Rif C. R/15721 (Medal Roll). He attested 4/10/1915 declaring his age to be 25 years 11 months. This was incorrect as he was born O/N/D/1887. He was posted to France 3/2/1916 incurring a finger wound 3/8/1917 rejoining his unit 31/8/1917. In 1919 Clara was granted a weekly pension of 13/9d. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial: Panel 115 to 119 and 162A and 163A.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 12 October 1917: ‘Brown. Killed in action September 20th, Rifleman Charles Brown, King’s Royal Rifles, husband of Clara Brown, in his 30th year. Wife. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs Brown of Leicester Street.’
There is a record in a Nottingham St Mary's parish register which was compiled during the war, of a Charles Brown living with a family called 'Wilkinson': (1914) 31 Leicester Street. Wilkinson, 7 children, Charles Brown (killed)'. (Nottinghamshire Archives, ref PR6786, p453). This address appears in Charles' army service record.
