Family history

Arthur Brierley (junior) was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur Brierley (senior) a house painter and Elizabeth Ann Brierley née Jackson of 26 Nugent Street St Ann's Nottingham.

His father Arthur Brierley (senior) was born in 1861 at Leicester, his mother Elizabeth Ann Jackson was born in 1866 at Nottingham, they weremarried on 6th November 1887 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they went on to have two further children, William born 1888 and Sarah b1893.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Edwin Street, Nottingham, Arthur 50 yrs is a house painter, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, William 21 yrs a general labourer,Arthur 14 yrs an errand boy and Sarah 18 yrs a lace hand.

Military history

Private Arthur Brierley enlisted at Nottingham he served with the .2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 22, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
