George James Bostock was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a tram mechanic and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bostock née Slack and the brother of Eliza, William Henry and Claude Bostock.
His father William was born in 1858 at Nottingham, his mother Lizzie Slack was born in 1868
at Nottingham, they were married on 28th December 1881 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they had 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 7 Sandringham Road Sneinton Nottingham William 53 yrs a tram mechanic is living with his wife Lizzie 43 yrs and their children, Eliza 29 yrs a blouse cutter, George James 18 yrs an electrical engineers clerk, William Henry 14 yrs an accunts office boy and Claud 9 yrs a school boy.
George James Bostock was the husband of Ada Nelson (born 2nd October 1892) of Sneinton Dale Nottingham, they were married on 29th December 1915 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Their only child, a son Georgie, born 17th July 1917 died 27 November 1918 aged 16 months.
His mother Elizabeth (Lizzie) died 15 June 1922 aged 53 and his brother Claude died 14 June 1922 aged 20.
Commencing 28th May 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private George James Bostock enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps he was reported Missing on the hospital ship Brittanic, former White Star Line (sister ship of the Titanic), requisitioned by the government. She sailed from Southampton on 12 November 1916 for Mudros to evacuate casualties. On 21 November 1916 she sank in the Kea Channel following a massive explosion, probably caused by hitting a sea mine laid by a German submarine. The ship sank within 55 minutes of the explosion. Most of the approximately 30 casualties of over a thousand onboard died when two lifeboats, which had been lowered without orders, were sucked into the ship's propellers. Family headstone Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'Also our dearly loved eldest son and our fondest brother, George James Bostock, who was missing on the hospital shop Brittanic on 16th 1916, aged 24. Sweet are the memories that never fade, of those we more than loved, but could not save. Reunited. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away.'
Additional inscription on the headstone of his daughter's grave in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of George James the beloved husband on Ada Bostock, who was lost on the hospital ship Brittanic, Nov 21st 1916 aged 24 years.'
