Family history

William John Wrighton was born on 18th January 1883 at Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland, he was the son of John William Wrighton born 1850 a painter and decorator and Elizabeth Bennett born 1850, they were married on 15th May 1870 at St Mary's Church, Nottingham, they had 3 children.

William John Wrighton was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Cassidy whom he married on 4th June 1906 at The Nottingham Registry Office, (Maria Polly CWGC). they lived at 41 Beauchamp Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, they had 4 children, John William born 14th June 1911, Ethel May born 18th February 1907, Florence born 12th August 1914 (she died on 26th September 1915) and Albert born 28th June 1916.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 4 Pleasant Row Carlton Rod, Nottingham, William John 28 yr a house painter he is living withhis wife Mary Elizabeth 26 yrs and their children, Ethel May 4 yrs and John William 3 monhs old.

His widow later moved to 41 Beauchamp Street Carlton Road Nottingham.

Military history

Sapper William Jon Wrighton enlisted on 27th August 1914 at Nottingham giving his age as 29 yrs and 225 days, he was a house painter, he was posted to the Royal Engineers, he landed in France on 14th July 1915 and on 6th December 1915 was returned to England and posted to the 6th Depot Royal Engineers at Newark. He was discharged from the Army on 12th February1916 being no longer physcically fit for war service. He was awarded a Silver war badge number 14386.

He died on 10th December 1918, he is buried at The Nottingham General Cemetery.
