Cecil Charles Frederick Whitby was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Herbert a commercial traveller printing and the late Agatha Whitby née Hunter of 18 Alison Rise Alfred Street Central St Ann's Nottingham.

His father William Herbert was born in 1869 at Nottingham, his mother Agatha Ann Hunter was born in 1869 at Nottingham, she died in 1900 aged 31 yrs they were married on 26th October 1890 at St Ann's, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census his widowed father and Cecil are living at 18 Alison Rise, Alfred Street Central, Nottingham, which is run by Mary Marriott 64 yrs a widow and boarding house keeper, Cecil 17 yrs is a lace warehose man, his father William Herbert 42 yrs is a commercial travller printing.

Private Cecil Charles Frederick Whitby enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Royal Socts Lothian Regimet, he died of wounds on27th October 1917, he is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery
