Family history

Joseph West was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Charles West a hosiery trimmer and Jane West née Griffin,of 13 Washington Street, Nottingham.

His father Charles was born in 1866 at Nottingham, he died in 1907 aged 41 yrs, his mother Jane Griffin was born in 1867 at Nottingham, they were married on 11th November 1883 at St Marks Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Washington Street, Nottingham, Jane West 43 yrs a widow a lace worker is living with her children, James West 18 yrs a printer, Arthur 16 yrs a hawker, Joseph 14 yrs a scholar, Thomas 12 yrs a scholar , Jane 10 yrs and Nellie 8 yrs of age.

Joseph West married May Daykin (born 10th May 1895) they were married on 14th February 1914 at St Marys Church, Nottingham. they lived at 11 Florence Street Simkins Street St Ann's Nottingham

Commencing 6th March 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.

His widow May remarried Samuel Elliottt a coal miner o 15th July 1916.

Military history

Private Joseph West enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 10th August 1915 aged 23 yrs, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 1. Row C. Grave 1.

Extra information

His brother Private 43218 William Henry West enlisted at Nottingham, initially serving with the service number 24973 Sherwood Foresters Regiment he transferred to the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
