Herbert Townsend was born in 1888 at Nottingham he was the son of Albert a labourer Henrietta Tuckwood née Rodgers and the brother of Sarah, Mary, Henrietta, Elizabeth and May Tuckwood.
His father Albert was born in 1862 at Nottingham, his mother Henrietta Olive Rodgers was born in 1862 at Clay Cross they were married on 8th October 1881 at St Matthias Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.
In 1901 they lived at 35 Westville Street Peas Hill Road St Emmanuel (St Ann's) Nottingham. Henrietta later lived at 48 Caroline Street Peas Hill Road.
Herbert married Lottie Rossell (born 30th November 188) they married in 1907 at Nottingham, they lived at 37 Ashforth Street Alfred Street St Ann's Nottingham they had 3 children, George born 10th November 1908, Henrietta born 4th August 1911 and Edna May born 26th September 1917.
Commencing 1st July 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 6 pence a week. at this time hs widow was living a 4 Westville Terrace, Westville Road, Nottingham.
Private Herbert Tuckwood enlisted at Nottingham in the Sherwood Foresters, No. 4488, before being transferred to the Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres, but his body was never recovered. His name was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial (Panel 113-115)
