Family history

Joseph Townsend was born in 1881 at Bradley, Staffordshire, he was the son of the late John Benjamin a labourer and Elizabeth Jane (Betsy) Townsend née Hughes of Staffordshire.

His father John Benjamin was born in 1841 at Bradley, Staffordshire, he died in 1912 aged 71 yrs, his mother Elizabet Jane (Betsy) was born in 1854 at Tipton, Staffordshire, she died in in 1917 aged 63 yrs, they were married on 8th Decemer 1873 at St John's Church, Tipton, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Betsy 61 yrs is living at 7 Cardinal Street, Nottingham, she is living with her children Fanny 21 yrs a lace hand and William 16 yrs a printer.

He was the husband of Martha Dennis (born 27th August 1882) they were married in 1903 at Nottingham,

In the 1911 census they lived at 4 Chadburn Street Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham Joseph 29 yrs is in the mineral water trade, he is living with his wife Martha 28 yrs.

Military history

Pioneer Joseph Townsend enlisted and served with the Royal Engineers, he died on 7th July 1920 of general paralyisis at Nottingham, he is buried at the Nottingham General Cemetery.
