John James Thomas was born in 1888 at Birmingham, he was the son of the Late John Oliver Thomas a tailor and Sarah Elizabeh Thomas née Fosbrook of Darnall, Sheffield.
His father John Oliver Thomas was born in 1856 at Newton, Wales, he died in 1910 aged 54 yrs his mother Sarah Elizabeth Fosbrook was born in 1858 at Wolverhampton, they were married 6th July 1873 at St George, Wolverhampton, they had 9 children.
In the 1911 cenus his widowed mother Sarh Elizabeth 55 yrs is living with her children, Edward 33 yrs a timber merchant, Frederick 20 yrs, a coal miner hewer, Laura 17 yrs helping at home and Edith 14 yrs of age.
He was the husband of Kate Marshall (born 25th December 1886) and the father of Ethel Lilian born 1st March 1910, John born 19th February 1911 and Kathleen born 17th August 1913.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 15 Salford Street Robin Hood Street St Ann's Nottingham, John James 24 yrs is a widow cleaner, he is living with his wife Kate 24 yrs and their daughter Ethel Lilliam 1 year of age.
Commencing 2nd August 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private John James Thomas enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sheffield, he served with 'B' Coy 2nd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers. Professional soldier who arrived in France 13th April 1914, he was killed in action on 27th August 1914 and buried at Etreux British Cemetery (I. 7.)
