Family history

Robert Stevenson was born in 1894 at Derby he was the son of James a sewing machine agent and Elizabeth Stevenson née Wood of 8, Chandos Street, Coppice Road, Nottingham.

His father James was born in 1854 at Kelton, his mother Elizabeth (Betsy) Wood was born in 1854 at Tiverton, Devon, they were married on 24th October 1880 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they had 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 64 Union Road, Nottingham, James 57 yrs is a sewing machine agent, he is living with his wife Betsy 57 yrs and their children, James Edwin 24 yrs a boot repairer, Mable 21 yrs a blouse maker, Richard 18 yrs a bobbinand carriage hand, Robert 17 yrs an assistant outfitter.

Military history

Lance Sergeant Robert Stevenson enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Forester sRegiment. He was reported missing on 3 September 1916 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 15 September 1917:

'Dr W Needham, 26 Connaught Street, Nottingham, died at sea. August 12th. Sergeant R Stevenson (Sherwood Foresters), 11 St Ann's Valley, Nottingham, missing September 3rd 1916 now reported killed.
