Family history

Cyril Spick was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William Spick and Mary Betsy Spick née Ward (later Bennett) of 16 Smith Street Radford Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1868 at Arnold, he died in 1901 at Nottingham hewas 33 yrs of age, his mother Mary Betsy Ward was born in 1871 at Boston Lincolnshire they were married on 4th September 1888 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they had 6 children.

In the 1911 census Cyril 17 yrs and a joiners machinist is living at 42 Plantagenet Street North with his brother in law Ernest Farmer 28 yrs a house painter and his married sister Florence Ethel 24 yrs also living with them are his brothers John Charles 22 yrs a shop assistant and Victor 15 yrs a printers assistant.

Military history

Private Cyril Spick enlisted at Newark, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 16th September 1916, having no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 21 July 1917:-

'Spick. Reported missing September (15th?) 1916, now reported killed, Private Cyril Spick, Sherwood Foresters (late of Newark), age 23 years. Brother of Florence and Ernest Farmer, 14 Pym Street.'
