Family history

Joseph Smith was born in 1880 at Nottingham he was the son Phillip Smith a frame wrok knitter and Sarah Smith née Oliver of 2 Hornbuckle Row, Main Street, Carlton.

His father Phillip was born in 1848 at Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, his mother Sarah Oliver was born in 1849 at Bourne, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1870 at Nottingham, they had 14 children, sadly 8 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 2 Hornbuckle Row, Main Street, Carlton, Phillip 63 yrs is a frame work knitter he is living with his wife Sarah 62 yrs a housewife,

At the age of 33 years and a widower Josph married Martha Wild (née Whitehall) aged 32 yrs a widow whose father was James Whitehill, they married on 17th May 1915 at the Nottingham Registry Office , Shakespeare Street. They lived at 1 Cherry Place Woolpack Lane in 1911 and later at 9 Union Terrace Union Road Nottingham.

His first wife was Florence

Joseph Smith's pension record card shows his wife to be Martha Smith born 26th May 1881, they are living at 9 Union Terrace, Union Road, Nottingham, it states he had 3 children from his first marriage who were Edna Muriel born 7th May 1907, Sarah Ellen born 10th April 1909 and Joseph Israel born 26th September 1916. he also had two step children from his current marriage, James Henry Wild born 8th September 1903 and Arthur Wild born 6th May 1906.

Commencing 20th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Private Joseph Smith enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 23rd October 1917 aged 38 yrs, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
