Herbert Smith was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Henry a joiner and Harriet Smith née Palmer of Nottingham.

His father John Henry Smith was born in 1853 at Nottingham, his mother Harriett Palmer was born in 1857 at Nottingham, they were married on 22nd February 1874 ttheir marriage was recorded in the Beeston registration district, they lived at 16 Wellington Square, Henry Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, they had 3 other children, Joseph H P born 1875, John H born 1883 and Gertrude born 1885

In 1901 they lived at 37 Bombay Street St Ann's Nottingham.

Military history

Gunner Herbert Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with 'D' Bty 211th Bde. Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 4th November 1918 he is buried at Capelle-Beaudignies Road Cemetery
