Albert Edwin Smith was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of Edwin James Smith a warehouseman and his first wife Louise Elizabeth Smith née Jones, of Holly Gardens, Thorneywood, Nottingham.

His father Edwin James Smith was born in 1864 at Nottingham, his mother Louissa Elizabeth Jones was born in 1861 at Nottingham, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham they had 3 children, Albert Edwin born 1887, William Francis born 1889 and Arthur James born 1891.

His father remarried in 1889 to Mary Hooley born 1869 they had 2 children Herbert and George,

In the 1911 census his father is living at 56 Holly Gardens, Thorneywood Nottingham, with his second wife Mary, and is shown as Edwin James 46 yrs a warehouseman, he is living with his secodn wife Mary 41 yrs and his children, William Francis 28 yrs a warehouseman, Herbert Edwin 21 yrs a awarehouseman, George 19 yrs a warehouseman and Arthur James 19 yrs

In the 1911 census Albert Edwin has left the family home, his is living at 7 Dowson Street, Nottingham he is 24 yrs and a lace warehouseman, he is living with his uncle Henry Walker 44 yrs a lace manufacturer.

He was the husband of Marie Dodds born 4th November 1886 Woodborough, they were married on 7th August 1912 at Matthias Church, Sneinton, they lived at 120 Alfred Street South Nottingham. they had a son Arthur Gresham born 25th February 1914,

Commencing 31st March 1919 his widow was wawrded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
