Family history

William Henry Slater was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William Challis Slater a waiter and Eliza Slater née Sisson of Nottingham.

His father William Challis was born in 1857 at Oxton, he died in 1887 aged 30 yrs in the Bingham registration district, his mother Eliza Sisson was born in 1858 at Grantham, they were married in 1879 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, Lillian Alice born 1880, William Henry b 1887, Sarah Jane b 1885, and Ethel Faith born 1882.

His widowed mother Eliza went on to re marry George Hallam in 1891 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 51 Westville Street, Nottingham they are living with their stepfather George Hallam 66 yrs a cabman born 1845 at Wysall, William Henry 29 yrs a stableman (stepson) Sarah Jane 26 yrs a general servant (stepdaughter) and Ethel Faith 23 yrs a dress maker (stepdaughter.)

William Henry married Nellie Parker (born 29th May 1885) on 1st July 1914 at Emanuel Church, Nottingham, they lived at 49 Westville Street, Nottingham, they had a son William Edwin Slater born 26th November 1914.

Commencing 16th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

William Henry Slater went to theatre (France) after 1 January 1916 and only served with the 9th battalion.

The battalion attacked Poelcappelle Belgium on 4 October 1917 and successfully took all of its objectives. It was though at high cost with over 100 killed and 200 wounded. William was moved to the Casualty Clearing Station at Dozinghem and died there three days later. He is buried in the cemetery which was next to the CCS - Dozinghem Military Cemetery, grave VII. I.8
