Family history

Harold Siney Shaw was born in 1894 at Thorneywood, Nottingham, he was the son of Everard a hosiery hand and Clara Shaw née White and the brother of Ernest , John Bernard and Harold Sidney (killed in action 6/12/1917) Shaw.

His father Everard was born in 1866 at Sutton in Ashfield his mother Clara White was born in 1863 at Sneinton, Nottingham, they were married on 22nd April 1889 at St Ann's Nottingham, they had 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 40 St Bartholomew's Road St Ann's Nottingham, Everard Shaw 45 yrs a hosiery hand is living with his wife Clara 48 yrs and their children, Ernest William 21 yrs a cycle wheel builder, John Bernard 19 yrs a railway wagon repairer, Harold Sidney 17 yrs a carter and Clarence Joseph 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Lance Corporal Harold Sidney Shaw was called up for service he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he took part in the Battle of Cambrai. He was killed when hit by a shell. on 6th December 1917 his body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval. (Panel 8). He was the second son to be killed in less than two months.

His brother PrivateClarence Joseph Shaw enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 77575 in the Sherwood Foresters, later he served with the 7th battalion Royal Wset Surrey Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
