Alfred Ernest Roadley was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick a carter and coal dealer and Alice Roadley née Moore of Cromford Street, Nottingham. he was the brother of Alice, Frederick, Mabel, Horace, Winifred and Leslie James Roadley.
His father Frederick was born in 1863 at Aslockton, his mother Alice Moore was born in 1869 at Fakenham, Norfolk they were married in 1892 at Nottingham, they had 9 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family at 8 Cromford Street St Ann's Nottingham., Fred a carter and coal dealer is living with his wife Alice 42 yrs and their 7 children including Alfred Ernest 18 yrs a telephone atttendent.
Private Alfred Ernest Roadley enisted at Oakham, Rutland, he served wit the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 5th February 1917, he is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery Grave Reference: Grave Reference V D 37
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 23 February 1917: ‘Roadley. Dead in action February 5th, Private Alfred E Roadley (Leicesters Regiment). Mother, father, sisters, brothers, Fred in France.’
