Samuuel Day was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was christened on 20th December 1887 at Nottingham he was the son of Sarah Ann Day of 2 Flewitt Street Alfred Street St Ann's Nottingham.
His mother was born in 1863 at Radford, she had 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 3 Machine Street, Nottingham, Sarah Ann Day 51 yrs single and a machinist is living with her children, Mabel Riley Day 16 yrs a machinist, Lillie Day 8 yrs a scholar, May Day 8 yrs and Dick Day 10 yrs of age,
Private Samuel Riley enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment,he was killed in action at Neuve Chapelle, on 12th March 1915 and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.(Panel 26 & 27)
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 12th March 1917 : -
“RILEY. - In loving memory of Private Sam Riley, Sherwood Foresters, late of Sussex-square, killed in action, Neuve Chapelle, March 12th, 1915. We never thought when he left home that he would ne'er return, but the unknown grave is the bitterest blow, none but aching hearts do know. - From his loving mother, sisters, and brothers.”
