Ernest Walter Riley was born in 1879 at Nottingham, he was the son of of the late Walter Riley a lace maker and Emma Riley née Beedham of 9 Agnes Street, Dame Agnes Street, Nottingha,.
His father Walter was born in 1841 at Nottingham, he died in 1895 at Nottingham aged 54 yrs, his mother Emma Beedham was born in 1846 in Nottingham, they were married on 22nd November 1863 at St Marys Church, Nottingham they had 3 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 19 Beverly Street, St Ann's, Nottingham ,Emma Riley 65 yrs is a widow and works in the lace trade, she is living with her sons Albert 47 yrs single a coal dealer and Ernest Walter 31 yrs single a coal dealer.
Private Ernest Walter Riley enlisted at Nottingham on 9th November 1914, giving his age as 35 yrs and his occupation as that of a coal dealer, he stated had previously military service, 12 yrs in the Royal Navy which he left on 8th November 1909 time expired. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he joined the Mediterraenan Expeditonary Force on 29th January 1916. He later joined the Briish Expeditionary Force on 16th April 1917. He died of wounds on 7th December 1917, he is buried at Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery
