Samuel Richards was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a machine fitter and the late Mary Richards née Smeaton of 16 Dane Street, St Ann's, Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1856 at Nottingham his mother Mary Amn Smeaton was also born in 1856 at Nottingham, they were married on 30th August 1874 at St Marks church, Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at Dane Street St Ann's Nottingham, William 55 yrs is a machine fitter, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 55 yrs and their son Samuel 15 yrs an office boy in the lace trade.
Gunner Samuel Richards enlisted at Nottingham, he served with 'Z' 40th Trench Mortar Bty, Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 5th December 1917 he is buried at Neuville-Bourjonval British Cemetery, France
