John Sylvanus Redgate was born in 1884 at Castle Donnington, he was the son of the late Arthur Walker Redgate a landscape painter and Edith Elizabeth Redgate née Henson and the brother of Arthur Dudley and Edith Mary Redgate.
His father Arthur Walker was born in 1860 at Nottinmgham he died in 1906 at Nottingham aged 46 yrs, his mother Edith Elizabeth Henson was born in 1864 at Birmingham, they were married in 1883 at Nottingham, they had 4 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 cenus the family lived at 159 Woodborough Road Nottingham. his widowed mother Edith Elizabeth 47 yrs is living with her children, John Sylvanus 26 yrs a manager at a cotton lace dresser, Arthur Dudley 19 yrs a clerk at a cotton lace dresser, and Edith Mary 9 yrs of age.
John married Dorothy Bloom born 27th August 1887 they were married on 22nd September 1915 at St Andrews Church, Nottingham, they lived at 56 Chaworth Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, they had a son Arthur John born 22nd 22nd August 1917,
Commencing 11th August 19191 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private John Sylvanus Redgate enlisted at Nottingham, he served at the Clearing Office (Blackheath)in the Army Srvice Corps, he died on 6th February 1919 of pneumonia at West Bridgford Nottingham whilst on demobilisation furlough, he is buried at the Nottingham Church Rock Cemetery.
His headstone at Nottingham Church Cemetery reads :-
