Family history

Herbert Sydney Raven was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William John a wheelwright and the late Ann Raven née Sills , he was the brother of Hannah Rebecca, Florence Gertrude, Ethel Beatrice and Henry Albert Raven.

His father William John was born in 1848 at Nottingham, he died in 1909 aged 61 yrs his mother Ann Sills was born in 1850 at Scarrington, she died in 1919 aged 69 yrs, they were married on 11th July 1867 at Scarrington, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 6 died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 7 Raglan Street St Ann's Nottingham. Ann Raven 61 yrs a widow is living with her 5 children including Herbert Sydney 21 yrs a cabinet maker.

Herbert wass the husband of Mary Elizabeth Schuster (born 1st August 1891 ) they were married in 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they lived at 41 Lewis Street Alfred Street St Ann's Nottingham. They had a daughter Mary Elizabeth born 4th August 1918.

Commencing 19th May 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Sapper Herbert Sydney Raven enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 72nd Field Coy, Royal Engineers and died whilst serving in India on 27th October 1918 of tuberculosis of the lung, he is buried at Deolali Government Cemetery, India.
