John William Pickering was born in 1897 at Church Greasley, he was the son of Charles a coal miner hewer and Annie Pickering and the brother of Annie, Mary Elizabeth, Charles William, Florence May, George Edward, James Douglas and Sidney Pickering.
His father Charles was born in 1866 at Overseal, Derbyshire his mother Annie wasborn in 1864 in Wexford, Ireland, they were married c1889, they went on to have 11 chilkdren, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at Westdale Lane Mapperley Nottingham, Charles 50 yrs is a cola miner hewer, he is living with his wife Annie 47 yrs and their 8 children including John William 14 yrs .
John William married Florence Daisy Johnson born 9th June 1899, on 28th April 1018 at St Annn's Nottingham, they lived at 12 Heath Terrace, Salter Street, Nottingham,
Commencing 28th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 9 pence a week.
His widow married Arthur Murden at Nottingham in 1919. They lived at 16 National Terrace Westminster Street St Ann's Nottingham.
Private John William Pickering enlisted at Nottingham, he served wih the 8th Royal Lancaster Regiment, he was killed in action of 27th September 1918, he is buuried at Lowrie Cemetery, Havrincourt, France.
