Family history

Robert Mellors was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Mellors a black smiths striker and Fanny Mellors née Smith of 27, Sabina Street, St Ann's, Nottingham. He was the brother of William, Walter and Harold Mellors who served in France.

His father Walter was born in 1863 at Hull, his mother Fanny Smith was born in 1865 at Nottingham, they were married on 11th December 1884 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham they had 5 children, sadly 1 was to die n infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Lamartine Street, St Ann's Nottingham, Walter 48 yrs is a blacksmiths striker, he is ligin with his wife Fanny 46 yrs and their children, Robert 16 yrs a card puncher and Harold 12 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Robert Mellors enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 19 yrs and 199 days, he was initially posted to the Seaforth Highlanders before being transferred on 5th November 1916 to 1st Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers.

He was wounded a gun shot wound to his chest, on 26th September 1915 and was returned to England for treatment.

He embarked from Folkstone on 4th November 1916 and landed in Bologne the same day. He was awarded the Military Medal on 16th July 1918

He served for four years one month before he was killed in action during the heavy fighting on the Chemin des Dames Ridge on 4th October 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Panel 6
