Charles Mason was born in 1887 at Nottingham, It is probable his parents were Willie Henry George Mason a paper hanger and painter and Annie Mason and that the family lived on North Sherwood Street in 1891 and in 1901 was living at 39 Hungerhill Road St Ann's (both Nottingham).
His father was born in 1858 at Newport, Monmouthshire, his mother Annie was born in 1860 also in Newport they had 7 children.
In the 1911 census we find that Charles has left the family home and has joined the Army, he is in barracks In India with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers Regiment, he is 24 yrs of age and is single.
Hs pension record card show his claiment to be his mother Mrs Annie Mason of 76 Leicester Strret, Nottingham and later 14 Clifford Street, Derby.
He probably enlisted in 1905 aged 16 but claiming to be two years older. He was serving with the battalion (1st Northumberland Fusiliers) in India in 1911 leaving in 1913 when the battalion returned to the UK. He was recalled as a Reservist in 1914.
He was killed in action on 24th August 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the La Terte Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
