Family history

John George Locking was born in 1879 at Frodingham, Lincolnshire, he was the son of Eliza Locking who was born in 1861 at Caistor, Lincolnshire, his mother went on to marry Job Swingler (born 1855 at Crick, Northamptonshire,) they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Brigg registration district,

They went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 35 Edwin Street, Nottingham, Job Swingler 56 yrs is a labourer at a colliery, he is living with his wife Eliza Swingler 48 yrs and their children, Mary Elizabeth Swingler 24 years a top winder, Catherine Swingler 20 yrs a hosiery hand, Lancelot Swinger 18 yrs out of work and Eva Bailey Swingler 10 yrs of age .

His mother Eliza Swingler later lived at 9 Pole Street Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham

In the 1911 census John George Locking has left the family home, he is living at at 47 Beauchamp Street, Lincolnshire he is shown as32 yrs and is a shunter, he is living with Susan Clarke 45 yrs a widow and boarding house keeper.

Military history

Private John George Locking enlisted and served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regment, he landed in th Balkans on 29th September 1915. He was killed in action on 18th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
